Ford has begun selling 3D printable versions of some of its vehicles via its website.
This week, the company starting retailing STL format CAD (computer-aided design) files and pre-printed 3D models via its new 3d.ford.com website.
If you go down the do-it-yourself route, the STL files can be used with any compatible 3D printer (home or commercial). They can be used to produce desktop-friendly models, life-size versions, or anything in between, in any material that the printer supports, be it plastic, sandstone or metal.
Pre-printed 3D models currently sold on the website are 1/32 scale.
At present, Ford is selling digital and pre-printed versions of its F-150 Raptor ute, the new all-wheel drive Focus RS, the current Focus ST, Fiesta ST and upcoming Mustang Shelby GT350R.
All these vehicles currently cost US$4.99 ($6.49) for an STL CAD file or US$39 ($50.70) for a pre-printed single colour PLA plastic model. These are being advertised as limited time prices, and do not include tax and other charges.
From June 15, the company will sell a version of the next-generation Ford GT. Pricing has yet to be revealed, but there will be a limited edition pre-printed full colour sandstone model available for an undisclosed price.
Ford promises that “more models will become available later”.
