Volvo V40 Carbon debuts Polestar optimisation in very limited numbers

The Polestar-tuned Volvo V40 Carbon was unveiled overnight, but the chances of ever seeing the car down under are next to zero.

At the beginning of the month, the companies announced that it would soon be offering Polestar Performance Optimisation packages for models powered by Volvo’s Drive-E engine lineup. These Polestar upgrades, it was said, would focus on optimised engine performance, improved throttle and off-throttle response, and better gearshift speed and precision.

The Volvo V40 Carbon is the first car to spring forth from that programme, but it will only be built in very small numbers: 343 all up. And this small batch of vehicles will be sold in just five countries: Finland, France, Japan, the Netherlands and Sweden.

When Polestar Performance Optimisation was first announced, Oliver Peagam, Volvo Australia’s director of marketing communications, told CarAdvice that a local launch had yet to be locked in and that any introduction would have to wait until after the 2016 model year cars made it into showrooms.

Under the bonnet, the Volvo V40 Carbon can be had with Polestar-tuned version of Volvo’s turbocharged D4 diesel and T5 petrol Drive-E engines.

The 2.0-litre D4 turbo-diesel motor has had its output improved from 140kW/400Nm to 149kW/440Nm, while the 2.0-litre D5 turbocharged petrol engine has now produces 189kW/400Nm compared to the regular motor’s 180kW/350Nm.

For the V40 Carbon, Polestar engine tuning is only standard in Sweden and optional elsewhere.

The Carbon will also be fitted with a selection of carbonfibre components, as well as unique 19-inch alloy wheels, branded scuff plates and red seat belts.

Pricing has yet to be announced for the V40 Carbon. Polestar says that it will announce details about its optimisations for other cars and drivetrains, including the T6 and D5 engines, in the last week of June 2015.
