Towing the right way: Quick tips

Right way to tow a trailer with a Mitsubishi Outlander

Maybe you’re planning for the well-deserved vacation or are preparing to move and are ready to put the Mitsubishi Outlander’s towing capability to the test. If you’ve never towed a trailer before, you’re in luck and we’ll walk you through the right way to tow a trailer with a Mitsubishi Outlander. The most important thing to remember is towing a trailer is much different than driving your Mitsubishi Outlander without it. Changes to the weight of the trailer, that while seem slight can be a big deal when on the road.

  • All about the gear
If your 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander isn’t equipped with a towing hitch, it’s time to install one. Luckily, the majority of hitches on the market are simple to install and don’t require welding. Be sure to choose the correct size hitch. Depending on your vehicle, a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander equipped with front-wheel drive will need a Class 1 hitch (2,000 pounds GTW) and an Outlander with all-wheel drive will need a Class 2 hitch (3,500 pounds GTW). Contact us today about price on the right parts and installation for your 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander.
  • To bring or not to bring
When you take into account the weight of all the items inside your trailer in addition to the weight of the trailer itself, it’s easy to go over the towing capacity limit. The important thing to remember is to load the trailer with the heavier items in the front and have a balance of 60 percent of cargo weight in the front and 40 percent of weight in the back. (This may vary by manufacturer so see manual for details.) Also be sure to tie or secure everything in the trailer to ensure everything stays in place.
  • Safety comes first
Cross the chains for extra protection in case the tongue loses its grip on the ball. Be sure to check the tongue weight and double-check the charge on the brake battery. Last but not least, study up on how to operate a trailer safely on the road. If anything, contact the staff here at Continental Mitsubishi and we’ll be more than happy to give you some tips and tricks. Your safety comes first so take all the steps you can to ensure it.
