What do we know about Vauxhall? We know they’re part of GM and that they sell rebadged Opels as well as Holdens/Isuzus/Suzukis, etc., depending on which model we’re talking. I’ve gotten the impression that they were able to build some of the most boring cars of the UK and at the same time some of the most bonkers. But did you know it turned 50 years old? How about that it produced 5 million cars during that time frame? Just one of those two milestones is more than enough reason to produce one of the most entertaining commercials that one can’t find on Western television programming:
0:04 – It’s pretty self-explanatory which car is the Vauxhall Viva (HA), a really important car for the Vauxhall brand.
Shame that they didn’t label the rest of the cars on the video that appeared afterwards for those that aren’t part of the UK.
0:21 – Whoa. The ‘70s hit. Hard.
0:26- That’s quite a jump from the Viva HA. That’s a Firenza, but not just any Firenza, it’s the 1973 HPF (High Performance Firenza), nicknamed the ‘Droopsnoot’. It has quite the story. Quite a jump from a Viva HA, indeed…
0:33 – Still the ‘70s.
0:35 – The Chevette, as the UK knew it. That nose treatment was nicknamed ‘shovel nose’. This was during a time when GM was merging Opel with Vauxhall.
0:46 – Another Chevette, the rare homologation special Chevette HS.
0:50 – Hello, ’80s. Out of the Mk1 Astra variations, that’s a Vauxhall Astra GTE, one of the many contenders that fought in the hot-hatch wars of the 1980s.
0:59 – Um, ‘90s already?
1:00 – That’s a Mk3 Vauxhall Astra GSi. I believe I caught a glimpse of a hood vent, meaning this was the ’91-’94 150HP GSi.
1:11 – What a way to introduce the current generation of Astra, the sixth.
1:14 –Yes, that’s the same model that appeared on the ‘Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car’ segment on Top Gear (UK. Duh.).
1:24 – Well, it’s still a car commercial. They had to give the current model more pizzazz.
1:43 – Like a boss.
