Great Commercials - Summer of Style

If you’re convinced that after watching the 2015 Cadillac Escalade commercial that all of their commercials in recent memory are underwhelming, or that they’re not as fun as they used to be, this one might prove that it’s not entirely so.

0:02 – Assembly line robots? That’s different!

0:03 – It’s a fashion runway. I’m liking the colors.

0:04 – The ATS. A handsome little thing. It didn’t get that much screen time in this commercial, though.

0:07 – I’m liking that music, and so are those robots! The artist is called Sly, the song is called Gold, but this is the Betablock3r remix.

0:08 – The ELR. Do you believe this is the best commercial the ELR has been in?

0:08.5 – Unidirectional rims!!

0:09 – Goodness, it’s gorgeous.

0:13 – The SRX. I’m not wild about those wheels. Given the choice, I wouldn’t have sent ‘er down the runway with those. Midnight Silver wheels would’ve looked great, IMO, though I don’t know if they would’ve been available during that time.

0:16 – The CTS. Talk about a dramatic entrance, with its in-your-face headlight shine and a slower pace down the runway than the rest.

0:24 – Because they’re making an offer on the CTS, it’s natural that this ad gave it more screen time. I also found one for the SRX, as well as another one that just showed the cars. I chose this one because it’s the one I saw on TV, BBC America of all channels.

The only thing I’d add is a Cadillac Escalade as a social critique to the fashion world, because they can’t tell what plus-size truly is no matter how many Tumblr blogs I send them that cover the topic. But this is a mid-’14-season commercial, not a new-for-’15 (which is what the Escalade is) commercial. Well, the SRX is somewhat plus-sized…

As far as car commercials go, it’s quite simple. Cars, dark room, well-placed cameras and lighting, screens, a runway and turntable that supports the weight of the cars, etc. No (fake) explosions (Scion FR-S), CGI stuntwork (Nissan), comedy/drama (Subaru), actress/models (Fiat), exhibition of speed (Mercedes-Benz/AMG) or even jaw-dropping scenery (2014 Cadillac CTS). It only shows the product and the deal that went during the summer of 2014, hence the post title. That’s it. That’s its purpose. The most unique and eye-catching thing that stands out (for those that are already familiar with Cadillac’s line-up) is the synchronized dancing robots. A great touch, I must say. But enough to consider it a great commercial? Maybe. Maybe not. But it doesn’t leave me with a bad taste in my mouth, so it gets a pass.
