  • Slowing it down
This may be one of the most important parts when it comes to towing a trailer. Always reduce your speed when towing and don’t go faster than 55 mph. Because of the extra weight and vehicle length, it’s important to leave extra space between you and other vehicles when towing a trailer.
  • Smooth sailing
If you’re going slow and taking it easy the trip should be pretty straightforward. If you’re faced with bad weather or crazy traffic there are some things to keep in mind so your trailer stays in line with your vehicle. If the trailer starts to sway or whip around, simply take your foot off the gas and do not apply the brake or speed up. Simply coasting until the erratic movement stops should help. If your trailer ever gets a little out of control, keep the steering wheel movement to a minimum and take the foot off the gas.
  • Hills and passing
Taking on some hills on your trip? No problem. Be sure to use the same gear going downhill as you would going uphill and slow down before you go down. Also, when passing just remember that your vehicle will need more space than usual.
  • The parking dilemma
How do you park with this thing? The easiest thing to do is to park in a place where you can pull forward. When backing into the spot and you start to jackknife, simply pull forward and straighten out the trailer before you attempt to park again.

Sometimes the easiest way to practice towing is to do so on a country road. Get off the highway and spend some time practicing in a parking lot or back road.
