Porsche and BMW among first to offer Apple Watch apps

The much anticipated Apple Watch doesn’t hit buyers’ wrists until June, but that hasn’t stopped German luxury manufacturers Porsche and BMW rolling out updates to their smartphone apps to support the new tech gadget.

Apple’s smartwatch isn’t a standalone device, and essentially acts as a remote interface to your phone.

For existing users of BMW i Remote and Porsche Car Connect apps, the watch is now a shortcut way to check status of your car, or perform basic functions like locking and unlocking, or showing the vehicle’s location on a map.

Arguably someone with all this technology on hand (pardon the pun) should’t really be forgetting where they parked their car, but the apps do showcase where we are heading with connected cars and wearable technology.

We expect to see an increase in automotive app support for wearable technology in the coming months, but aside from the ‘cool’ factor, we can’t really see a hugely valuable requirement for these.

While the Porsche Car Connect app is not available to Australian users, the BMW i Remote is, and the Android version of the app is already available on the Samsung Galaxy Gear watch.
