The next-generation BMW 5 Series has been snapped on the Nurburgring by our spy photographers.

Car Advice’s spy snappers first caught the new 5 Series out and about in late 2013. Since then they’ve spotted several more prototypes, including a plug-in hybrid version, but the rate of camouflage shedding has been slow.

The latest prototype features, what seem to be, production headlights and a completely undisguised roof, as well as a disguise-free section of bonnet.

The new 5 Series will reportedly utilise BMW’s “35up” platform, which is set to underpin the company’s next-generation of rear-wheel drive vehicles. This encompasses everything from the 3 Series upwards, with all smaller vehicles switching to the front- and all-wheel drive UKL platform that’s shared with Mini.

35up reportedly makes heavy use of carbonfibre and aluminium, and will help vehicles based off it shed weight. It’s estimated that the new 5 Series will be around 100 kilograms lighter than the current model.

It’s rumoured that, in some markets, the new 5 Series will be powered by everything from a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine all the way through to a stonking big V8.

The next-gen BMW 7 Series will be the first car to utilise the Munich company’s new 35up platform, and is expected to debut later this year. The 5 Series is widely tipped to follow some time in 2016.
