For those favoring classic Italian sports cars fronted by raging bulls instead of prancing stallions, there’s good news: Lamborghini is not only bringing back its restoration services, the Volkswagen Group-owned supercar purveyor is expanding its classic car offerings under the newly announced Lamborghini Polo Storico banner.
Following the trend of automakers like Jaguar, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari, each of which have growing divisions dedicated to the care, preservation and restoration of classic models, Lamborghini is following suit with a variety of services targeted to owners of older Lamborghinis. For those researching the brand, or a specific model, the Archivio Storico Lamborghini offers documentation on models, technical diagrams, paint color samples, leather upholstery swatches, images and copies of all company publications. Today, much of the information (leather swatches excluded) is available only in reprint form, but future plans include hosting much of the data in digital form, for easier access by owners and researchers.
A certification program will be available to document the originality of cars and components, protecting and perhaps enhancing value on the resale market. The group will maintain spare parts inventories for classic Lamborghini models, but its most ambitious offering will be complete restorations, using original materials, parts and processes, of vintage models. Those wishing to take advantage of restorative or certification work will need to make arrangements to get their Lamborghini to Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy, the company’s home since its founding in October of 1963.
From Lamborghini’s perspective, the importance of its Polo Storico department extends beyond its contribution to the company’s bottom line; in the automaker’s own words, the new group, “emphasizes the importance of preserving its broad heritage and unique knowledge.” As has been the case with the classic-centric divisions of other high-end automakers, Polo Storico will likely enhance Lamborghini’s image among collectors, too.
