Vintage auto racing is nothing new at Barber Motorsports Park, located on the outskirts of Birmingham, Alabama. The Barber Historics, however, is an all-new event for the facility, which blends Historic Motor Sports Association-sanctioned racing with a swap meet, a “Barber-que” with grilling demonstrations and samples of championship-winning barbeque, a car corral and on-track events to create something of interest for the whole family. In honor of the 50th anniversary of Lotus’s Indy 500 win and F1 World Championship, the storied British constructor’s racing cars will be celebrated at the debut Barber Historics.
Patterned after the park’s successful motorcycle-themed Barber Vintage Festival, the Barber Historics will feature over 250 vintage race cars, competing in a variety of classes that include crowd favorites like Formula One, Can-Am and Trans-Am. Grand Marshal of the May 15-17 event will be George Follmer, who will also mark the 50th anniversary of his 1965 SCCA U.S. Road Racing Championship title, earned behind the wheel of a Porsche-powered Lotus 23B.
Visitors will also have access to George Barber’s impressive on-site museum, which houses a truly astonishing collection of motorcycles alongside the largest collection of Lotus racing cars in the world. For those wishing to drive the track for themselves, parade laps will be available for purchase, as will ride-alongs with professional drivers in late model Porsches, as part of the Porsche Experience.
