2016 Opel Astra spied on the road in Europe

Our spy photographers have snapped photos of the next-generation Opel Astra on public roads in Europe, giving us our clearest look yet at the next-generation hatchback.

Compared to earlier prototypes, the latest pre-production versions of the Astra are clothed with production body work, bumpers and lighting.

Peaking out, for the first time, from the layer of camouflage are the new Astra’s L-shaped tail-lights.

It’s said that underneath the Astra’s new clothes is an updated version of the current car’s Delta II platform. Despite sharing elements with current-generation Astra, the new car is said to be around 150kg lighter, which should translate to improved performance and fuel economy.

Motivation will likely be provided by a range of three- and four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. Some models will feature a dual-clutch transmission instead of a traditional automatic transmission.

In August last year, our spy photographers managed to capture a shot of the new Astra’s interior. The car’s completely revised dashboard features GM’s MyLink touchscreen infotainment system and a streamlined button layout.

Rumours indicate that the new Astra will debut at the Frankfurt auto show in September.

Given Holden’s plans to launch 24 new models in Australia by 2020, as well as its stated desire to recapture number one spot on the sales charts, it’s highly likely that the new Astra will find its way into Australian showrooms with lion badges affixed.
