WSBK: Round #1 EBR Superpole Report – Phillip Island

Niccolo Canepa race action shot EBR Press Release: Team Hero EBR riders Niccolo Canepa and Larry Pegram completed the pre-Superpole combined qualifying sessions in 18th and 22nd places respectively at Phillip Island in Australia, with Canepa improving to 17th in Superpole 1. He was finally promoted to 16th after another rider was made to start from the rear of the grid. Niccolo will now start his 2015 season off the fifth row of the grid in Sunday’s two 22-lap races. He will continue looking for set-up improvements in the morning warm-up session tomorrow to optimize his machine’s balance in hot track conditions. Rider/Team Manager Pegram is still suffering from long lasting effects of a stomach bug that has affected his testing and qualifying performances. The American rider qualified 22nd but will go to 21st on the grid after the demotion of another rider to the last place on the grid. The first two races of the year are expected to be held in hot conditions at the classic 4.445km Phillip Island circuit, located in the extreme south of Australia. Extending tire life to the very end is always the most important part of pre-race considerations at this historic track, with so many fast left hand corners around the fast and looping layout. Larry Pegram race action shot Larry Pegram #59: “For me, it has been ground hog day, really. I woke up this morning and felt a little bit better but by the time I got on the bike I was feeling bad again. I feel good in the mornings but by midday I am back down again. I have been sitting on the toilet for five days straight and I have a fever every night so it is starting to wear on me. I am still gritting my teeth to ride. I am just having problems concentrating to the level to go faster. No excuses, I am just mad that I got sick when I got sick. I came all the way to Australia, in first practice did a 1’35.0, which is about a second and a half of Nick, not even knowing the track, and then I got sick. The funny thing is I went out in the last free practice session, nearly didn’t even try because it does not count for grid places, and I did almost my fastest time. I am trying to think my way around the laps but I cannot get my brain to concentrate. I hope I feel better for tomorrow.” Niccolo Canepa #72: “We got into Superpole after qualifying so that is positive thing. I have also been unlucky because with the Superpole rear tire on the bike I did one out lap and was ready to start for a better time, and then the red flag came out. With the Superpole tyre at this circuit it only lasts for one fast lap. So I was a bit scared for the last couple of corners on my next lap because it was sliding. In hot conditions the balance of bike is not quite working like I want it to, it is not turning. I have good grip on the rear but when I have that on the rear it lifts up the front and I cannot turn the way I want. So far we have not been able to find the solution. I will push again and see what happens tomorrow.” For more information: www.ebr.com
