Mitsubishi Concept GC-PHEV: The next Montero?

Is the Mitsubishi Concept GC-PHEV the next hybrid Montero?

Earlier this month we shared the latest on Mitsubishi’s new Concept GC-PHEV that Mitsubishi Motors unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show. Not only is the GC-PHEV a hybrid vehicle, it’s full of innovative technology. One of the most impressive features inside the futuristic vehicle is a low, “tactical table” that runs in the center of the vehicle, between the seats and not only lights up, but can charge electronic devices.

Maybe the biggest question is could the GC-PHEV be the next hybrid Montero? The full-size SUV was sold in North America from 1982 to 2006 and the vehicle for the final-model year came equipped with a 3.8-liter, V-6 engine. The 2006 Montero was a true off-roading machine and featured cabin with premium materials and a large sunroof.

Similarities between the Concept GC-PHEV and 2006 Montero can be seen in the general shape, off-roading capability and large sunroof, but that’s where the similarities end. Mitsubishi went to great lengths to create the SUV of the future and the Concept GC-PHEV feels like just that. From the futuristic technology to the Concept GC-PHEV’s 3.0-liter supercharged MIVEC engine and 70kW high output motor, the SUV is a standout.

If Mitsubishi does have the Montero’s return in mind, a hybrid version would be revolutionary. The Montero is known for it’s serious off-roading capability and a SUV with the power to handle tough terrain while being ultra-efficient would be perfection. Hybrid SUVs are becoming more and more popular and taking that direction would only make sense for Mitsubishi. Could the Mitsubishi Concept GC-PHEV the next hybrid Montero? Only time will tell!

What do you think of the Mitsubishi Concept GC-PHEV and would you like to see a hybrid version of the Montero? Stay tuned for more news from Mitsubishi as more updates come available. Only time will tell what’s next for the Montero!
