McLean, Illinois, 1960s

Dixie Truckers Home Intersection Rt.66 and 136 McLean, IL

Reputedly the first truck stop in America, the Dixie at the corner of routes 138 and 66 in McLean went through some major transformations in the 1960s thanks both to a devastating fire and the coming of Interstate 55. This photo of the Dixie that we came across while perusing Natale Slater’s Route 66 photography project appears to show the truck stop (sans trucks) sometime after the fire and subsequent rebuild. What do you see here?
