Mitsubishi demonstrated it’s thinking far into the future with the North American debut of the futuristic Concept GC-PHEV that stole the spotlight at the Chicago Auto Show on Thursday. The striking GC-PHEV is faceted like a metal gemstone and is filled with green tech as well as being a thinking-forward machine. In fact the GC-PHEV is a full-size SUV with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The new Mitsubishi SUV made its world premiere at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show and is the first SUV the brand has offered since 2006. The Mitsubishi Concept GC-PHEV 70-kilowatt electric motor compliments the 3.0-liter V-6 engine that are estimated to deliver up to 335 horsepower. GC-PHEV is an abbreviation of Grand Cruiser Plug-In Hybrid and is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a 12-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack.

Overall, the GC-PHEV has a very dynamic look and that creative approach to design continues inside the cabin. There’s seating for up to four and the rear doors are hinged in the rear, which creates an open concept interior. In addition the Mitsubishi Concept GC-PHEV can deliver up to 1,500 watts of power to a household.

There are no details yet on if or when the Mitsubishi GC-PHEV will be sold in the United States. In the meantime Mitsubishi fans interested in a plug-in hybrid may enjoy the Outlander midsize crossover that is anticipated to be available in a plug-in hybrid version in the near future.
