To show off the new dual-clutch transmission in the Volvo FH, Volvo Trucks has pitted its big rig against the Koenigsegg One:1 hypercar on a race track.
In the video Tiff Needell, one of the hosts of Fifth Gear, pilots the Volvo FH against a Koenigsegg One:1 steered by the company’s test driver, Robert Serwanski.
On-paper, the matchup clearly favours the road car. The Koenigsegg One:1 features a 5.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 generating 1000kW of power (1360PS) and 1371Nm of torque. Power goes to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Tipping the scales at 1360kg, the Koenigsegg One:1 claims to be the first road-legal production vehicle with a one-to-one power-to-weight ratio — if you don’t mind mixing imperial and metric measures, that is.
Its opponent, the Volvo FH, has a 12.8-litre straight-six turbo-diesel engine that is capable of generating 403kW of power and 2600Nm of torque. In Europe, the FH and all other trucks of its ilk are electronically speed limited to 90km/h. For the purposes of this race, Volvo disabled that part of the truck’s circuitry, allowing the FH to hit speeds of over 125km/h.
To even up the battle, the Koenigsegg has to complete two laps to the Volvo’s one in order to win.
If you’re feeling impatient, skip ahead to the race which starts at around the 5:20 mark.
If nothing else, this latest video proves that Volvo Trucks knows how to promote its goods.
In previous videos, the company has demonstrated the stability of its new FM and FH trucks by having movie star Jean-Claude van Damme do the splits and Faith Dickey walk a tightrope. Both of these feats took place between two moving trucks.
Remember that Volvo Trucks and Volvo Cars are separate entities, the latter of which is owned by Chinese automaker Geely.
