There will be no all-wheel drive version of the 2015 Mercedes-AMG C63.

Mercedes-AMG CEO Tobias Moers told CarAdvice at the 2014 Los Angeles auto show that all-wheel drive has been definitively ruled out for the performance version of the new-generation C-Class.

“No,” he said of the potential for an all-wheel drive version of the high-performance model.

“C63 – come on, you like rear-wheel drive cars,” he said, speaking specifically of the Australian taste for rear-drive performance cars.

The C63 shares its main hardware with the all-new Mercedes-AMG GT sports coupe (pictured below), which CarAdvice is attending the launch of this week in the US.

Moers said there’s plenty of shared elements, including the fact both are powered by the same high-output 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 and both have rear-wheel drive only.

“In the C63 there’s a big piece of [the new Mercedes-AMG GT]. And you don’t [lack] the traction on the C63, I promise you.

“C-Class and sports car is, for us, dedicated [rear-wheel drive],” he said.

However, Moers did suggest that the brand could consider an all-wheel drive version in the future, and the company has previously stated its line-up will be dominated by AWD models in the coming years.

“You never know what will happen in the future, but today and for the near future, we will stick with a rear-axle driven car,” he said.
