Lexus LF-C2 convertible “purely a concept”, says chief designer

The stunning Lexus LF-C2 convertible concept is believed to offer up plenty of hints about a new drop-top from the Japanese luxury brand – but the man who designed the car, Yasuo Kajino, told CarAdvice there are no plans to push it to production.

Well, not yet.

Speaking at the 2014 Los Angeles auto show, Kajino, chief designer for Lexus, alluded to the car as a design study rather than a precursor to a new convertible sports car based on the new RC coupe.

“We were exploring different design studies here and there,” Kajino said via an interpreter. “For example, you look at the front DRL and the rear combination light with Lexus signature design. So again, we’re exploring it, we may take something to the future design vehicle.

“It’s more of a study for like a design cue rather than a complete car coming out. We may take pieces from this car, but again, not as a car as is,” Kajino said.

“This time it’s a pure concept,” Kajino asserted. “Yes, it was a complete design study for this time.

“If we were to consider as being a production model, we would have to start from scratch, you know, thinking that it’s going to be a production model. So it’s difficult to answer how many years it’s going to take,” he said.

Asked specifically if there are plans for a convertible to replace the ageing IS250 CC, Kajino indicated it is on his to-do list.

“Convertible is a great model to actually showcase your brand image, especially when we are trying to perceive the emotional design aspects,” he said. “Personally I would like one.”

The Lexus RC coupe goes on sale in Australia later this month.
