What would someone on a car magazine editor’s budget need to buy a handsome 1963 Shelby 289 Cobra like CSX 2120, currently for sale for more than $1 million on Hemmings.com? A time machine would help.
We can’t claim to be able to account for every single time this 289 Cobra has changed hands in the past decade, however, a quick search of our own classified listings and Google turned up some seriously bungled buying opportunities.
Back in April 2001, for instance, CSX 2120 could’ve been ours for the paltry sum of $138,000 when it was put up for grabs and sold at Christie’s Exceptional Motorcars at the Lyndhurst Property auction in Tarrytown, New York.
In 2004, it crossed the block at RM’s Monterey Auction and sold for $253,000.
CSC2120 as it appeared in the July 2011 issue of Hemmings Motor News.
Then, CSX 2120 appeared for sale again in the July 2011 issue of Hemmings Motor News with an asking price of $550,000. Today? Yup, more than a million. (The price at the top of the listing is $1,125,000 while the ad copy says $1,150,000.)
Can the price of this car continue to double or so every few years or is it topping out? How would you have answered that question in ’01 or ’04? Anyone know where we can pick up a good used time machine?
