Bentley SUV may be christened Bentayga

The British brand’s first ever SUV may be badged as the Bentley Bentayga, when it goes on sale in the early part of 2016.

Autovisie is reporting that the much teased and sometimes spied Bentley SUV will be named Bentayga, after a peak on the island of Gran Canaria, part of Spain’s Cayman Islands off the coast of Morocco.

If this report is correct about the Bentayga name, it hints that the British marque’s first ever high-riding vehicle should have some serious off-road ability. This would confirm earlier comments from the company that the new SUV would be as capable as a Range Rover.

Wolfgang Durheimer, Bentley’s CEO, told the Dutch publication that the brand’s first SUV is on track for launch in “early 2016″.

Despite the fact that the Bentayga, or whatever it will be called, is based on the Volkswagen Group’s MLB platform for longitudinal front-engine, front- and all-wheel drive vehicles, and shares much of its underpinnings with the next-generation Audi Q7, Durheimer claims that it is taking much of the company’s engineering capacity.

Much of this, Durheimer says, comes down to Bentley’s relatively small size, and its engineers being more accustomed to working on sedans, coupes and convertibles. Additionally the Bentley SUV will be only car in its class with a 12-cylinder engine. The car will also be offered, eventually, with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain.
