The Bentley Grand Convertible has been unveiled ahead of its public debut at the Los Angeles auto show later this week.

Underneath the Grand Convertible’s, at the moment, unique body are the mechanicals used in the company’s top-of-the-line Mulsanne Speed sedan, as well its 21-inch alloy wheels and directional tyres.

Lurking below the liquid metal bonnet is the brand’s 6.75-litre twin-turbo V8. With 395kW of power and 1100Nm of torque on hand, performance should be supremely adequate, although the company has yet to quote performance figures.

The Mulsanne Speed sedan can complete the 0-100km/h dash in 4.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 305km/h. Whether the Grand Convertible can match the Speed’s straight line performance depends a lot on whether or not it’s heavier than the 2685kg sedan.

The company has shied away from describing the Grand Convertible as a concept, choosing instead to call it a signal for “Bentley’s intentions for the future”.

Wolfgang Durheimer, Bentley’s CEO, says that the brand is “eagerly awaiting the response of our customers to this car [and] we will ensure that this car — if it reaches the roads — will be a highly exclusive, extremely limited collector’s piece.”

As you’d expect from Bentley, especially when the company is trying to impress potential buyers, there’s acres of diamond-quilted leather used throughout the car’s interior. According to Bentley, 14 different hides were used for the show car’s interior.

The Grand Convertible’s stitching thread has been dyed the same colour, sequin blue, as the car’s exterior. The tonneau cover for the vehicle’s soft top is, it’s claimed, the largest piece of wood veneer ever crafted by the company. The darkened burr walnut cover is finished off with chrome ribbing.
