Robots Tout Switching To Sprint In New Commercial

Robots tout switching to Sprint in the carrier’s newest commercial, which will air during the Super Bowl this coming Sunday at some point. Sprint, which is now the fourth largest wireless carrier in the U.S., can often be heard highlighting that its network reliability is within less than one percent of Verizon’s, yet it offers customers services at a much less expensive monthly rate than Verizon. This is essentially the argument that the robots are making in the new ad spot.

Centered around a person who creates the robots pacing the floors of his lab, the commercial points out that the robot notices its creator is a Verizon customer, then draws attention to the details listed above about network reliability, then proceeding to attempt to understand why a customer would want to pay so much more for wireless service from their carrier when they could more or less have the same service with nearly the same reliability, all wrapped up in a much cheaper monthly plan cost.

What Sprint is trying to suggest to consumers is that if artificial intelligence knows that “Sprint is the obvious choice” then humans should know as well. In the ad the robot, named Evelyn, asks these questions and after the Verizon customer mentions that they didn’t think of the fact that Sprint’s network reliability is so close to Verizon’s at half the cost, the robots begin to mock the man in question for not switching yet. The ad pokes fun at the idea of co-workers, or perhaps close friends and acquaintances joking around and making fun of people they know for making such a decision when they could easily have the same thing while saving quite a bit of money. The message Sprint is sending here is nothing new – which is that it offers service at half the cost of Verizon yet is really just as reliable. It certainly seeks to deliver the message in a new way though, albeit a comical one. The use of artificially intelligent robots also fits right in with the kind of commercials you can expect to see during the Super Bowl, as companies tend to put out ads which will draw the attention of viewers as much as possible, and this usually relies on everything from the extremely weird to the extremely funny.
