BLU Trying To Address The Android Update That Locks Its Phones

American smartphone manufacturer BLU has confirmed that it is investigating an issue surrounding a recent OTA update that permanently locks its devices, according to several users who contacted the company over the issue. The Miami-based firm is known for its low-cost Android devices, holding a significant share of the unlocked smartphone market in the U.S. Unfortunately for some customers, a recent update sent out by the manufacturer has locked many users out of their BLU devices, rendering them useless.

The update that was sent out on November 28 for users of the BLU Life One X2 asks them for an unknown alphanumeric password upon reboot in order to unlock their devices. Even those who use their fingerprint or a pattern to access the device on a daily basis are being forced to enter a password. Currently, however, the only possible workaround is to completely reset the devices. By entering the password incorrectly ten times, the phone will automatically wipe all data and reset itself, but users can also hard-reset the smartphone in order to speed up the process. Those who do not wish to lose all of their data have little to do but wait. BLU has confirmed via Facebook that it is working on a solution, with users on Reddit stating that the firm’s customer service told them that it will release an automatic rollback that should, in theory, apply itself without needing access to the phone. Unfortunately for many, though, it appears the company’s customer service helpline is fully loaded, with many being forced to wait over two hours before getting a chance to speak with BLU’s representatives. The company has yet to confirm a time frame for the update, with BLU simply advising those who cannot wait to perform a factory reset.

This isn’t the only recent incident with BLU’s handsets; just last year, a number of the company’s Android smartphones were found to include spyware that passed on user data to a Chinese entity, though the OEM denied any responsibility. This eventually led to sales of the affected BLU R1 HD being halted altogether until a solution was found. Sales eventually restarted but were stopped again for a week earlier this year after new concerns about the presence of the spyware were raised.
