Where should we eat near Pike Place Market?
This was our dilemma on our recent trip to Seattle. The choices are so overwhelming and everything just looks so damn good. Paul and I settled on a modern Korean Gastropub right near our hotel in Pike Place Market.
We knew we were in for a treat, when we saw how busy Chan Seattle was and the crowd starting to gather outside for their phenomenal happy hour from 5-6:30 PM daily. I can easily say it’s well worth the wait and the line moves quickly. We arrived right at 5 PM and the place was already busy with hungry diners.
Ahi Tuna Poke
We enjoyed the small plates concept because it gave us a chance to try a little bit of everything while sipping on a beer or cocktail. Paul and I started with the Ahi Tuna Poke ($14) on the suggestion of our waitress.
We were not disappointed! The fish was incredibly fresh and served with a crispy shrimp chip type cracker, daikon on top with radish and avocado on the side. The Korean-inspired marinade features honey ginger flavors with chili oil with flecks of green onion.
Deep Fried Rice Cakes
I cannot enter our Korean restaurant without ordering rice cakes ($5). These were perfect – crispy on the outside with still a nice chewy texture and not too spicy in case you were unsure of the bold red color.
The sauce is a mix of sweet and spicy and made for a really nice side dish to pair with our other sharing plates.
Skillet BiBimBap
Another Korean food favorite of mine and an easy dish to share with a group. Chan’s version of BiBimBap ($14) features bulgogi beef, a fried egg, assorted vegetables on a bed of rice.
The rice gets nice and crispy if you let it sit for awhile against the hot skillet. Make sure to mix it with gochujang sauce for even more complex flavor.
Korean Fried Chicken Wing
These are not to be missed and are signature dish at Chan’s. We saw them gracing almost every table around us. The Korean Fried Chicken Wings ($10/6) are fried until super crispy before they are smothered in a sweet chili caramel glaze with chopped peanuts and green onions on top.
Ginger Creme Brûlée
The perfect indulgent sweet ending to our meal with this Ginger Creme Brûlée ($6) with candied ginger on top. The crust was perfectly crispy and the dessert was a sweet creamy finish to a fantastic meal.
It’s a well-sized serving to share with a friend.
We loved our visit to Chan Seattle and would definitely recommend for the next time you’re in the city or near Pike Place Market.
