Images and details of the long-rumoured BMW X4 M40i have appeared online ahead of the car’s imminent official unveiling.
The latest model in BMW’s M Performance range of vehicles will become the flagship variant in the X4 sports crossover line-up, sitting above the current X4 xDrive35i range-topper.
Data sheets leaked on BMW enthusiast blog Bimmertoday reveal the X4 M40i’s turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine produces 265kW of power from 5800-6000rpm and 465Nm of torque between 1350-5250rpm, representing a 40kW/65Nm hike over the 35i’s outputs.
That extra power and torque is said to launch the X4 M40i from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds, making it 0.6sec quicker than the 35i, while its top speed remains capped at 250km/h.
Despite the performance gains, combined cycle fuel consumption climbs less than four per cent to 8.6 litres per 100 kilometres.
As with the rest of the X4 range, an eight-speed automatic transmission will distribute drive to all four wheels.
There’s little differentiating the X4 M40i from a regular X4 with the M Sport styling pack, however giveaways include the split single exhausts on either side of the rear bumper (others get twin pipes on the left), 19-inch alloy wheels, and satin grey front air intake garnishes and mirror cap covers.
While an even sportier X4 would not doubt prove popular among Australian buyers, CarAdvice understands the M Performance model may not be in line for right-hand-drive production.
A BMW Australia spokeswoman could not shed any light on the X4 M40i today.
