Here’s something you don’t see everyday – a Buick-powered Chevy Corvair gasser. Photos by Kurt Ernst and Terry Shea.
Perhaps it was the nice weather after a very long Northeast winter, or maybe it’s simply the fact that word about Hemmings Musclepalooza is spreading outside the area, but Sunday’s 21st running drew a record crowd of participants. We’re still waiting on the exact numbers, but Lebanon Valley Dragway announced over 1,200 cars total, including more than 800 on the show field alone. As for attendance, 4,000-plus spectators were on hand to take in the event’s sights, sounds and smells.
Under the Corvair’s hood. Or trunk, depending upon your perspective.
Gassers seemed to be more prevalent than in years past, and perhaps the most unusual car on display was a first generation Chevrolet Corvair gasser, powered by what appeared to be a big-block Buick V-8 mounted up front, in the trunk. Another gasser-look car, a street-driven 1961 Pontiac Tempest owned by George Munsterman of Fishkill, New York, took top honors in our Modified Muscle category.
Sean Trestick emerges from the smoke of an epic burnout in his 1990 Corvette Rick Mears Edition.
Burnouts were the order of the day, and not just on the dragstrip: John Marshall treated the crowd to an impressive access-road smoke show in his 1971 Duster 340, on the way to collect his trophy for our second-favorite Plymouth, but no one lit their tires more impressively than Sean Trestick in his 1990 Corvette Rick Mears Edition, en route to an award as our second-favorite late model GM.
The show field was crowded by mid-morning.
It’s not too early to make plans for Musclepalooza XXII, which takes place on Sunday, September 6, 2015 at the Lebanon Valley Dragway in New Lebanon, New York. Until then, enjoy this gallery from Musclepalooza XXI.
