Hemmings Find of the Day – 1937 LaSalle Series 50 Sport Coupe

1937 LaSalle Sport Coupe

To some in the collector car hobby, authenticity matters above all else, while to others, drivability is king. In keeping with the latter philosophy, this 1937 LaSalle Series 50 Sport Coupe, for sale on Hemmings.com, has been modified to increase its performance and reliability, both critical factors when competing in a cross-country event like the Great Race. This particular LaSalle has run the event four times, in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005, meaning that any potential weak points have long since been worked out. For those preferring originality, however, the current owner states that the parts removed are also available. From the seller’s description:

1937 LASALLE 5027 “GREAT RACE CAR” This car completed all four Great Races that it competed in, ‘02 San Antonio to Anaheim, ‘03 Livonia to Daytona, ‘04 Jacksonville to Monterey, ‘05 Washington, DC to Tacoma, WA. The car has been rebuilt with too many modifications to list all. Below are a few: car has been rewired; engine has been totally rebuilt, incorporating many later model parts as well as modifications to improve performance and durability; 8-volt alternator and battery; 48 Cadillac carburetor and distributor; turn signals, accessory gauges-heat and oil pressure; magnets on all wheels, K&N air filter; four new Firestone tires; double electric fuel pumps; “Flying Dutchman” water pump. Body is solid with no Bondo. Where parts have been replaced, the originals are available with the car.
