About Kia’s New Turbocharged Kappa Engine
During the push for automakers to try and make smaller, more powerful and efficient engines, Kia is responding with a new little turbo that made its world debut just last week. Here at Briggs Kia, we’re excited about the addition and therefore would like to fill you in a little bit about Kia’s new turbocharged Kappa Engine.
It may be quite some time until we see the 1.0L T-GDI turbo gasoline direct injection engine in U.S. vehicles. It will make its world debut in the cee-d GT Line. Once these vehicles have had their time to shine, and show off the potency of combined power and efficiency, it will become available for future Kia vehicle models.
One of the primary benefits to the new turbo is its high response, helping to improve the maximum torque from low engine speeds. Currently, Kia has a 1.6L GDI engine with a curved air intake port, but one of the biggest differences with the newer, smaller turbo is that it will instead have a straight port. The benefit to this that instead of the engine scraping to find clean air to re-use for combustion, the waste-gate can be opened simultaneously, improving waste air flow.
Another advantage to Kia’s new engine is that it is built with an integrated exhaust manifold; the purpose of this equipment is to slightly reduce the exhaust gas temperatures which will in turn better high speed fuel economy and improve emissions.
More power. Better efficiency. This what nearly everyone looks for in a new vehicle, and for that, we are thrilled about the direction that Kia is heading in. Until more information becomes available, we encourage you to look further into the 2015 Kia vehicle lineup available here at Briggs Kia.
