While a turbocharger atop the engine in this 1970 Volkswagen-based sand rail for sale on Hemmings.com might seem like overkill, given that the entire vehicle probably weighs half as much dry as when loaded up and manned, it appears that the builder of the rail put plenty of thought into its construction, buttoned everything up nice and even accounted for wheelie potential with the ballast mounted to the front. From the seller’s description:
This is a very nice VW Rail that has all the bells and whistles, a true fun machine that behaves well. Clear Florida title, it is street legal and insured. The frame was welded up in Los Angeles and the 2000 CC engine was built there also with the proper high performance heads pistons and cam for the Garrett Turbo which pumps from a Holly 4 barrel. Front disc brakes and drum rears with turning brakes. Full acrylic windshield. Carry rack. Tool box. Fiberglass bucket seats with full 3 point safety harnesses. Front tires are P155X80 15″ radials, rears are LT 325/60 15″ radials on polished aluminum wheels. 200 pounds of lead ballast on the front. Optima red top battery. Moving Map GPS. No rust. No smoke.
