INTERVIEW: Marc Marquez We catch up with the two-time MotoGP World Champion at the Sepang 2 test.

Marc Marquez headshot Marc Marquez continues to impress. The reigning MotoGP World Champion has started 2015 right where he left off in 2014—at the top of the time charts. The winter tests in Sepang underscored that he remains the man to beat. His 1:58.867 lap during the first test was faster than his pole position in 2014 (1:59.791). Marquez also dominated the second winter test, which concluded today. His best lap of 1:59.115 put him three tenths second ahead of his nearest rival, Jorge Lorenzo . In a superb race simulation, Marquez ran only thee laps above 2:00. Marquez won in his rookie year when he was learning, becoming the youngest MotoGP World Champion ever and the first rookie to capture the premier class crown since Kenny Roberts in 1978. He dominated in his second year, winning the first 10 races and beating Mick Doohan’s record of 12 wins in a season, which had stood unblemished since 1997. What should we expect from his MotoGP season number three? In the first 2015 MotoGP test, Honda brought seven bikes—four for Marquez, three for Dani Pedrosa . For the second test, two weeks later, there was a new chassis built only for Marquez, and he was asking for more traction. Marc Marquez Sepang track action Q: If you want to win, do what the winner does and do it better. How can Marc Marquez be beaten? A: I don’t know. I keep the focus on myself, trying to improve every time so that I can be even better than last year. I think Honda did a very good job and we’ll be ready in Qatar. Q: What is the limit for you? A: I am 22. I have many things to learn and I need to get more experience. The level is really high, my competitors are very experienced, and if I look back at last year from the outside it seems easy, but I assure you that it wasn’t at all. Q: With so much success at your young age, what keeps you motivated? A: The most important thing in life is doing what you really love the most, and that is what I am doing since the very beginning. I really enjoy what I have been doing in the last few years and this keeps me motivated. I have very good memories, special highlights, but the key is trying to be always happy, on and off track. Q: During the 2014 season, you asked for a bike that better suited your riding style, a machine that was not so precise and perfect. What was the reaction of the Japanese engineers? A: I believe they did a really good job. I felt good during the winter tests in Malaysia. Marc Marquez resting in the paddock Q: What did you ask Honda engineers to improve at the end of the 2014 season? A: The bike we used in Valencia for the test was too aggressive and I was not comfortable with it. We needed to find different ways… and they did! Q: Honda worked hard over the winter, bringing seven bikes to the first test at Sepang. Four for you, and three for Pedrosa. Which bike did you choose? A: During the first MotoGP test here at Sepang two weeks ago, I did a comparison test among the RCV 2014, the Valencia test bike and the 2015 version. I finally chose the last one. I’m really happy. The 2015 bike is already at the same level as in 2014, and there is still plenty of room for improvement. Q: Are you satisfied with the work done during the first two winter test sessions? A: We first did a comparison test, and once I chose the 2015 bike we focused on the corner entry. During the second test session, we worked on the rear and on the engine character. I’m happy because we made a step forward. Q: In Sepang 2, there were still two RC213V machines in your garage, one with a modified chassis to find more rear grip. Correct? A: Yes. We tried all the new items Honda brought and the last day we evaluated two chassis options before completing a very positive race simulation with a track temperature of 49°C. I was already fast in the first test and satisfied with the long run. The target was to leave Sepang with a clear idea of the bike we will use during the 2015 season and with a good base setup. We have accomplished all the objectives we had set for these days. We discarded the modified chassis and I’m satisfied with the new bike—power delivery, braking, corner entry, cornering and exit. At least on this track I’m really comfortable. We will see if some issues arise on other racetracks. At the Qatar test in March, we will focus on the Grand Prix and fine tuning the setup of the bike. Marc Marquez cornering at Sepang action Q: Who do you see as your main contenders? A: As last year, Valentino [Rossi], Jorge [Lorenzo], and Dani. They are motivated and they will be fighting for the title. In particular, I expect Jorge will be a very strong rival. He doesn’t want to repeat the mistakes he did last year. Yamaha is also improving a lot, and the M1 already was very competitive last year. I think they will be strong from the beginning. Q: Who is the rider you respect the most? A: Valentino. Everybody knows what he has done in his career, the titles and the races he won, but what he is doing now is incredible. He is 36 and he is still there fighting. He is still competitive. It’s amazing. It is nice to have a reference like that because in the past people thought you might have to retire by 35. Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? A: I don’t know. It’s too early to say. If I am enjoying it like now, I can continue for a long time. But you never know, it does not depend only on you.
