Spirits buoyed by a recent win at the Texas Invitational, a totally unhinged display of power hosted by the Texas Speed Syndicate, Chicago-based tuning outfit AMS Performance figured the time was right to go for broke. With its stay in the Lone Star State drawing to a close, the team loaded up its2000-plus-hp Alpha Omega Nissan GT-R and headed to Baytown, Tejas, for a run at the previous GT-R quarter-mile record of 7.8 seconds.

Arriving after a six-hour drive to find a well-prepped track, the team’s first run was hampered by a timing equipment malfunction. Just as that issue was sorted, weather moved in scuttling the rest of the day. Unbowed, the team extended its stay for another night to make a run at the record. Greeted with less-than-ideal 90-degree temperatures and humid air on day two, the team swapped on a set of 15-inch drag slicks and demolished the quarter mile in 7.70 seconds, recording the action for your enjoyment:

We’re no strangers to the wizardry performed by AMS: The firm’s 1000-hp Ronin Nissan GT-R is the quickest road car we’ve ever tested to both 100 and 150 mph, and, yes, that includes Porsche’s megabucks 918 Spyder, which holds our 0-to-60 crown. Although AMS wouldn’t divulgeany secrets regarding how it constructed the record-setting Alpha Omega GT-R, it did say that, in addition to the car’s “2000-plus” horsepower, torque stands at “1300-plus-lb-ft”, adding that boost is “all over the place, the intercoolers are huge, and the internals including rods, cams, and pistons have all been strengthened. No nitrous, no supercharging.” Consider the mic dropped.
