In addition to claiming that all DSG-related issues have been resolved, Volkswagen Group Malaysia (VGM) managing director Armin Keller has also briefed members of the media today regarding the recent Volkswagen Beetle recall, as well as announcing a number of measures the company is taking to ensure a satisfactory customer experience.
The issue affects 2,134 units of the Beetle manufactured between April 2012 and July 2013 and concerns the trailing arm of the rear torsion beam suspension that can suffer from pre-damage through a rear-end impact. If the damage is unchecked and not repaired, this can in individual cases cause a sudden break in the trailing arm and a loss of control of the vehicle.
VGM has clarified that no such cases have been reported in Malaysia so far. Malaysian Jetta owners are not affected by a similar recall involving certain Jetta models overseas, as local units are fitted with multi-link suspension. Beetle 2.0 TSI models also feature rear multi-link suspension and are exempted from the recall as well.
Beetle owners will be able to check if they are affected by the recall by visiting a separate microsite, where they will be asked to input the VIN number of their vehicle, as well as whether their car has suffered from any form of rear-end damage. VGM will inform affected owners individually this week on further course of action, and owners unaffected by this issue will also be notified to assuage their fears.
The inspection process will take around 30 minutes, and the repairs will be performed free of charge. In addition, affected owners will also be able to have their cars picked up from any location starting from mid-November. The service will run until 9:00 pm, and customers will be provided with a free courtesy car while the repairs are being carried out.
