I suppose it remains a rite of passage for each Hemmings editor to make the journey to the Pebble Beach Concours, along with the many events that take place in the week prior in and around the Monterey Peninsula, from the many auctions to a variety of car shows, tours and vintage racing. It’s a hectic week, but well worth the trip.

For my first visit to the 18th fairway at Pebble Beach on the third Sunday in August, I traveled with Hemmings West Coast Associate Editor Jeff Koch, arriving early enough to beat the sun by a good 45 minutes or so. We were nearly alone for a few minutes, a handful of cars parked overnight and still draped in covers to keep the dew at bay.

During a ritual known as “dawn patrol,” I photographed as many of the cars as possible before the big crowds began showing up. I was warned that with such a task at hand, it would be hard to truly take it all in. Those warnings proved right as only now am I am able to truly appreciate the beauty of so many great cars that graced the lawn just a few days ago.
